Arlington PTA Sponsored Programs
The PTA sponsors a wide variety of school programs. Parent participation is
welcome at any level. Look through the list of our programs and join in!
Adventures in Art - The Adventures in Art program is based on the belief that
art education should promote individual expression by providing the opportunity,
materials, and the process from which children con create their own unique
conclusions and solutions. Docents attend workshops to learn and do each project
before presenting it in the classrooms.
Bike Rodeo - A city wide bicycle safety program. Students in grades three to
five, who wish to participate, take written and performance tests. School
winners advance to compete in the district level.
Blue Ribbon Week - A week long observance in appreciation and thankfulness to
all the Torrance Police Officers and officers in our surrounding communities.
Book Fair - To promote reading by providing an opportunity for children and
families to purchase books at reasonable costs. An independent book company sets
up a book store in the Arlington cafeteria.
Education - Parent Education: Workshops and other programs are planned to
educate and help parents understand and develop the skills that bring about
successful parent-child relationships. Student Education: This program looks
into ways the PTA can cooperatively work with teachers in providing educational
opportunities for our children (i.e. researching assembly and field trip
options).
Environmental Programs - Students are reminded of the importance of taking care
of our environment and recycling during Earth Week and throughout the year.
Special programs and assemblies are planned.
Harvest Festival - Families and friends are invited to bring your own dinner
or purchase pizza from the 5th graders. Potluck desserts, games for the whole
family, and a special drawing for great prizes at the end of the day.
Family Programs - Special events are planned throughout the year for families
to attend. These events are planned to draw family time together, have a lot of
fun, and to gather the Arlington family as well.
Firefighters Appreciation Week - A time to talk about fire safety and to show
our thankfulness to the firefighters in our community. A firefighter will be
invited to talk to the students and discuss the ways to be fire safe. Stop, drop
and roll!
Holiday Giving - A charitable giving opportunity for all Arlington families
to participate in during the December holidays. This is an occasion where
children can learn the lesson of giving and helping those who are less fortunate
than themselves.
Holiday Gift Shop - A holiday store set up in the Arlington cafeteria for the
students to buy affordable gifts for family and friends. Classes are scheduled
twice to visit the store; once to preview the selection and to calculate how
much they want to spend, the second time to actually make their purchases. The
children enjoy this opportunity to do some independent shopping.
Hoops for Heart/Jump Rope for Heart - All students are encouraged to
participate in this service project for the American Heart Association. This
program promotes exercise and healthy living. Students can participate by
playing basketball or jump rope on Hoops for Heart/Jump Rope for Heart day.
Collection of donations for the American Heart Association is optional.
Ice Cream Social - Always held on “Open House”, the Ice Cream Social is a
time to enjoy visiting with other families while enjoying a delicious custom
made sundae! The sundae bar always has a great selection of toppings to choose
from!
Parent Information Packets - Important papers from the school, district, PTA,
and community are packaged in a packet once a week for parents to review.
Parents are asked to sign and return the packet after they have reviewed the
material. This ensures that our parents are receiving all communications from
the school.
Reading Incentive Program - This program is designed to encourage and
motivate students to read. A reading goal is set and if classes reach their
goal, they receive a fun reward!

promote a drug free lifestyle. Different activities and programs ore planned
throughout the week to reinforce the message to be healthy and drug free.

express their gifts through the cultural arts. Students may enter any of the
following four categories (visual arts, photography, literature and music
composition). Winners from Arlington will advance to the district level with the
possibility of achieving recognition at the State and National levels.
Teachers Assistance Program (TAP) - Volunteers assist teachers by taking care
of some of the time consuming tasks that need to be done for their classroom
(photocopying, laminating, collating, etc.) This allows teachers and aides more
time to focus on the classroom.
