PTA President's Message - November 2009
Hello Arlington Families,
First of all, before taking a look at our month that has just passed, I
just want to thank our Arlington students, faculty/staff, families and
friends so very much for your very amazing support during the Fall
Fundraiser. Even with the current economic conditions, for a school of
approximately 600 children to still sell the amount of items that were
sold, was really amazing!!! With the funds that were raised, our Arlington
Superstars will continue to be provided with field trips, assemblies,
various themed weeks throughout the year, family programs, Adventures in
Art, library, safety items, technology, help assist our teachers with
their needs and provide additional items/materials needed in the
classrooms. Thank you again for your generous support!!! And thank you to
Sharon Sawai, Ways and Means, for overseeing this major event. Way to go
Superstars!!!
With that being said, I hope everyone was able to meet and get to know
your child’s teacher and their classrooms at Back to School Night. It was
a pleasure to see all of our amazing Arlington teachers as they were
introduced by our principal, Dr. Vicki Roloff at our 1st PTA Association
Meeting of the year. Thank you to everyone who attended. There will be 3
more Association Meetings (Dec., Feb., and May). Everyone is invited and
encouraged to attend to keep informed of PTA/school events and activities.
Arlington’s PTA Membership Drive, another successful event, came to an
end at the beginning of October under the direction of Lori Yamasaki.
Classrooms’ participation were tallied and posted and students, teachers
and even some parents were seen checking the board near the office to see
how their classes were doing. Classes with the highest percentages were to
be awarded a popsicle party for their efforts. All proceeds go to benefit
our local, state and national PTA. Memberships are available throughout
the year, so if you’d still like to join, it’s not too late. Thank you
again to Lori for your efforts and everyone who signed up for
membership!!!
Firefighter’s Appreciation Week was held October 5th – 9th. Thanks to
Leah Sawai for coordinating this event. Thank you also to Leah for
arranging to have Firefighters Robert and Paul speak at the Monday Morning
Assembly that week about Fire Prevention and Safety. They provided very
valuable information by speaking and providing demonstrations to our
student body about what to do to prepare for a fire and what to do in the
event of a fire.
The 2009-10 National PTA Reflections Program with its theme “Beauty
Is…” got underway at Arlington thanks to chairs Jan Nguyen and Terie
Tinsley. This is an annual event and opportunity for children to express
their creativity through various ways and have a chance to compete at a
National level. The “beauty” of this event is that like in art, there is
no right or wrong. It’s an expression of one’s own creativity. I hope many
of our Arlington Superstars took part in this contest and were able to
show their amazing abilities.
Speaking of art, Adventures in Art got started with their first project
of the year, “Sumi-e Poem” Thank you to Chris Mason and Cayme Momita (AIA
chair and supplies, respectively) and the many, many docents and parent
volunteers for your time and for bringing art to our children. As
mentioned, there is no right or wrong in art. Art is simply art and it is
a great way for our students to express their creativity.
Thank you also to Janet Fujimura (Teacher’s Assistance Program), Tim
Hartlove Campus Safety), Cayme Momita (Parent Information Packages),
Donna Rabut (Library) and all of their many volunteers for your time and
efforts. Your time and efforts are appreciated… and thank you to Janet
Kaneshiro, our 2009-10 Newsletter Editor.
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!!!
