PTA President's Message - April 2010
Hello Arlington Families,
Wow, it is hard to believe we are heading into the last few months of
this school year. Time just continues to fly by. Hope everyone is
enjoying our newest season, Spring!!!
March started off with a Read Across America/Dr. Seuss Day. Some of
our Arlington students were treated to readers who came into their
classes and read to them. Thank you to Sharon Sawai and Dawn Sawyer for
helping to coordinate the readers and hospitality respectively, along
with our 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Lyu who was also instrumental with this
celebration of reading. The kids really enjoyed themselves and had a
good time.
Reading Incentive Week appropriately followed Dr. Seuss Day. It was
March Reading Madness with an emphasis on “Madness.” Thank you to Laura
Shiozaki and Julia Tominaga who really put together a fun filled week of
reading. Each class was given a college basketball team name and the
tournament began!!! Kids could be seen reading here and reading there
and checking daily, the charts that showed their classroom and
individual progress. It was a close finish at the end and even though
there were classes and individuals who were awarded incentives for the
amount of hours that were read, everyone who participated were winners
because reading leads to winning. A very special thanks to The LVI Hoops
(Las Vegas Invitational) organization who helped to fund this event. We
appreciate your generosity and caring for our kids!!!
Adventures in Art began their 4th project of the year “Pastel Fruit
in a Bowl” by artist Julia Tedesco. Students were given tools needed to
draw better and understand art. They were taught use of color, shading
and dimension, fundamentals of art, and used chalk pastels to draw a
still-life of a bowl of fruit. I realize it is only the beginning of
April but please mark your calendars for Friday, May 21st. Adventures in
Art will hold their annual AIA Gallery gala and every student will have
a piece of artwork displayed at this amazing, magnificent event. It’ll
start at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Arlington. It is sure to be a
treat for everyone to enjoy!!!
The 5th Grade Class held a delicious spaghetti dinner on the 12th of
March. More than 500 dinners were sold. Thank you to everyone for
supporting our 5th graders and thank you to our 5th graders for an
evening of fun and one less night to cook!!! Always a treat when someone
else does the cooking!!!
Next, our students participated in our annual jog-a-thon fundraiser.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU to our ways and means officers, their jog-a-thon
committee, parent volunteers and a special thank you to Janet Fujimura
who could always be seen at school getting ready for this big event.
Thank you also to Mr. Kamida for emceeing the event and providing the
musical entertainment. Once again, thanks to all of students, teachers,
staff and our generous families at Arlington, the jog-a-thon was another
AMAZING success. Funds raised will be used to continue providing
programs, field trips, supplies, and much, much more thanks to everyone.
Again it was another busy month at Arlington. As we journey into the
last few months of this school year and with all the hustle and bustle
that will be going on, take the time to enjoy yourselves with your
children. They seem to be growing up so fast. Enjoy them while we can!!!
Have a great April and have a wonderful Spring Break!!!
